Madurai Seed was started in 1999 to help underprivileged children and young people from the poor area of Karumbalai in Madurai (Tamil Nadu). It places special emphasis on a holistic approach to developing the education of these youngsters in a variety of ways. Via drop-in centres, it offers help with schoolwork and later with the transition to working life. It does this through supported study groups and coaching, a library to help develop reading ability, sports activities, excursions, camps, and a range of creative activities such as dance, music, arts, etc. In 2007 Madurai Seed was officially registered as an NGO.
